In a shock announcement, mayor and councillor Roz Blades AM has announced her resignation from Greater Dandenong City Council, effective immediately.
Ms Blades said her difficult decision has been made due to ongoing health issues and was made with “the greatest regret”.
“I believe this decision is in the best interests of our city as I am not able to perform to the best of my ability and to the level which the council and its constituents should expect,” she said.
“It has been an honour to serve this city for the last three decades. Starting out as a councillor at the City of Springvale in 1987 it has been a wonderful, proud and fulfilling journey.
“I know I have given the role my best and hopefully leave having been part of making the city one of the best in Australia. Greater Dandenong is a great city and a great council and I am proud of what we have been able to achieve for the most multicultural city in Australia.”
She wished her colleagues at council well for the future.
“I leave this role knowing the future is in great hands under the leadership of John Bennie and the executive team. Thank you to all the wonderful community groups within the city that Terry and I are proud to call home and for all that you do,” she said.
Council will elect a mayor at tonight’s formal meeting for the remainder of the existing term, until the official mayoral election for 2019-2020 is held on Thursday 14 November.
