Booze bus nets near-perfect results

In response to an alarming 2024 road toll, Victoria Police breath-tested more than 720 drivers at a booze bus site in Dandenong North last week.

The good news was just one driver returned a blood-alcohol reading over the limit by the operation on Heatherton Road in the early afternoon of 1 May.

There were no drug drivers detected.

The bad news is that the operation was prompted by seven fatalities in the Dandenong area so far this year, as of 3 May.

Senior Constable Rod Vejar of Dandenong Highway Patrol said testing sites were a good reminder that “police can be out anywhere, any time”.

“Impairment is one of the biggest killers on our roads. That’s why we’re conducting 3 million breath tests and 150,000 roadside drug tests statewide every single year.”

Sen Const Vejar warned that drivers flouting the rules faced heavy fines, licence loss and possible vehicle impoundment.

“We will continue doing all we can to enforce the rules and keep people safe on Dandenong’s roads.”
