DDCA: South gets star import

By MICHAEL ELY

SPRINGVALE South has won the signature of Sri Lanka’s domestic record run holder, Jeevantha Kulatunga, in the lead-up to the 2012-13 Dandenong District Cricket Association season.

South’s secretary Tony Cooper said it was a very exciting development for the club.

“He’s a fantastic batsman who makes a lot of runs and bowls a bit of medium pace,” he said.

“He’ll fit in very well at the club.”

The signature of the 38-year-old Twenty20 representative completes a mixed off-season for South.

The batting strength of Kulatunga, who scored 9204 in Sri Lanka’s domestic league, is partly offset by the loss of leg-spinner Surajant De Silva.

Cooper said he was “reasonably confident” of signing up two top-line bowlers to replace De Silva.

The contacts of South’s coach, Craig Slocombe, in Sri Lanka were responsible for winning Kulatunga’s signature, Cooper said.

In other DDCA news, Doveton has picked up the IPL-listed player Dinesh Kumar, while losing Matthew Hutchinson to captain-coaching duties at sub-district side Endeavour Hills.

Coomoora has lost English import Liam Coutts and is actively looking for his replacement.
