‘Agree to disagree’ was the theme of a public meeting on SITA’s proposed community reference group for its prescribed-waste landfill in Lyndhurst.

At last Wednesday’s meeting, residents who live near the tip expressed cynicism about the consultation.

“You can speak up but you may as well knock your head against a brick wall,” a resident said. Another said: “For four years, there’s been talk, talk, talk but still we’re smelling s–t.”

The CRG is expected to have up to 20 community members – more than the steering committee it replaces.

But former steering committee member Thelma Wakelam said the new group was “watered down”, ending the formal membership of Casey and Greater Dandenong councils and the Environment Protection Authority.

SITA general manager Daniel Fyfe said representatives of the councils and the EPA were invited to attend the group’s meetings.
