VSDCA – round 7

MOUNT Waverley was on the ropes, but Noble Park couldn’t inflict the deciding blow early – letting the visitors’ tail wag to reach 154.
Rizan Mawzoon (6/45) was bowling grenades – his first-up spell was unplayable by the Mount Waverley top-order as Andrew Verstoep (9), Alex Deuchar (1), Chanaka Sampath (6) and Dhugal Bedingfield (3) fell to the seamer’s wrath.
The home side was soon 5/76 as Marasinghe Perera (2/35) got invited to the wicket-taking party, leaving a large hole for the home team to escape.
The must-get man was Myles Harry (63no), showing the backbone the rest of the top order could not muster to protect his wicket and help push the tail along.
Harry received his best help from number nine Adam Ternes (26) and the pair roused a 42-run partnership to bring the total towards a defendable one, and far away from ridicule.
Not content with a small bag, Mawzoon returned to reap more carnage – finding Ternes edging at 8/147 before Mevan Fernando (1/8) claimed the next wicket on the cheap.
The final curtain call belonged to Mawzoon as he claimed the last wicket in an impressive six-wicket haul – his fifth five-or-better wicket innings this season.
Cashing in on the hard yards of Mawzoon, the Noble Park openers put most of the deficit away with Dean Edmunds (28), Ben Edmunds (36no) and Perera (14no) knocking off half the required runs.
The match resumes on Saturday at Mt Waverley Reserve.
