RESIDENTS in burglary hot spots will soon receive a visit from police.
Dandenong, Casey and Cardinia are part of a Victoria Police pilot that will deploy patrols in areas where burglaries have occurred.
The initiative is based on research that shows houses within 400 metres of a burgled property are temporarily at risk of being targeted next.
Dandenong Sergeant Melissa Blair said it was a more pro-active approach to crime prevention.
“We know that burglars are likely to target properties in nearby areas so we’re out talking to residents to reinforce the need to lock up,” she said.
“It’s about increasing awareness that these crimes are happening and reminding people to be smart about securing their property, so that future burglaries don’t occur at all.”
There were 28,915 residential burglaries reported to police in 2012-’13 and more than 8000 resulted from a burglar entering through an unlocked door or window.
“A lot of the time these crimes are avoidable,” Sgt Blair said.
“Residents need to make sure that they have good quality locks on their doors and windows, and to use those locks at all times – even if you’re out for a short time.
“And if you are going to be away for a few days, let your neighbours know so they can keep an eye on your house and bring in the mail so it looks occupied.”
Police are also offering residents free security audits to help identify areas where home security could be improved.
