Dandy sign “ugly as sin”

By CASEY NEILL

“UGLY as sin” and “the work of bogans” are descriptions levelled at new signage installed in Dandenong’s Harmony Square on Tuesday.
Councillor Peter Brown has vowed to fight to remove the metre-high white letters planted in the civic square lawn.
“The signage itself is ugly as sin,” he said.
“It makes us look like bogans.”
Cr Brown said there was no consultation with councillors prior to the “abomination of what is a beautiful public space” appearing.
“It was installed less than 24 hours after we had most councillors at a briefing meeting with the same officers involved in its installation.
“Not one councillor was told.
“If councillors were consulted about the proposal I don’t think the majority of councillors would support it.
“Councillors could have and should have been invited to contribute ideas to the way in which the signage would be installed.”
Cr Brown said he’d move a notice of motion at the 13 July council meeting calling for the letters to be removed because “a public burning would be in breach of a local law”.
“It’s taking away the lawn space so you can’t walk across the lawns,” he said.
“It’s an ugly waste of civic space.
“It’s the work of bogans.”
The Journal contacted City of Greater Dandenong for a response but did not receive a comment by deadline.
