Migrant workers learn what’s right

A free forum will teach migrants about their rights in the workplace.
Maurice Blackburn, iEmpower and Trades Hall are presenting the Know Your Rights seminar.
“We are targeting local Greater Dandenong residents with a particular emphasis on educating newly-arrived communities as well as more established migrant communities,” lawyer Jenny Tran said.
“We’ve found that in the Dandenong community, both migrant and otherwise, there has been a significant lack of understanding or knowledge on any level regarding what rights one might have if you become sick or injured and are unable to continue to work.
“In these instances, we are finding that too many people fall into significant financial difficulty with no knowledge as to their rights.”
Ms Tran will present at the event alongside fellow Maurice Blackburn lawyer Katerina Patras, Dylan Goldsworthy from Trades Hall Council, and iEmpower CEO Abeselom Nega.
“iEmpower are currently doing wonderful work in the youth justice engagement space,” Ms Tran said.
“We all feel very passionately about empowering local residents with knowledge about their rights.”
Know Your Rights will run from 6pm to 8pm on Thursday 27 October, at Dandenong Civic Centre, 225 Lonsdale Street, Dandenong.
RSVP to Alana Blackman on DanReception@mauriceblackburn.com.au or 9794 0403 by Monday 24 October.
