Saved: the equivalent of 1.7 million showers

GREATER Dandenong council is saving the equivalent of more than 1.7 million showers worth of water each year based on new water-saving techniques.
The council says it is using only recycled water on garden beds and trees, and has planted drought tolerant grasses on 20 sports ovals.
The results have slashed drinking water usage as water restrictions toughen in Melbourne, currently at Stage 3a and tipped to move into Stage 4 unless heavy rain fills its dams this winter.
Greater Dandenong mayor Youhorn Chea said he was proud of the council’s water saving techniques.
He encouraged residents to continue saving water where possible, and to adhere to the rules outlined in water restrictions.
“Stage 3a is the second phase of Stage 3 water restrictions,” he said.
“Last summer we received only 40 per cent of the average summer rainfall and stream flows into our major catchments were well below average.”
