EastLink speed cameras on

POLICE will activate four more speed cameras on EastLink later this month.
Speed cameras located at the Wellington Road Bridge, two Rowville sites and two Dandenong Bypass sites will be switched on as of Monday 22 September.
The cameras will be active from after midnight on that day and all motorists committing a speeding offence from that time will have a fine issued.
Police activated speed cameras in the Melba and Mullum Mullum tunnels in August.
Assistant Commissioner Ken Lay said drivers would now be caught no matter where they sped along EastLink.
“The percentage of drivers speeding through the EastLink tunnels dropped from around 0.3 per cent on 29 August to 0.05 per cent after the cameras were activated on September 1,” Mr Lay said.
“This is really encouraging for police and shows that speed cameras really do work to slow drivers down and therefore increase road safety.
“Police have given the users of EastLink plenty of notice that these cameras are coming by announcing their installation in February and the activation of the tunnel cameras in August.
“Hopefully we see even fewer motorists taking that risk and speeding along this road with the activation of the final four camera sites, as well as some upcoming planned police enforcement activity.”
Police have erected eight temporary warning signs, and nine permanent warning signs, highlighting the use of speed cameras on this road.
During the testing period for the cameras on EastLink, prior to their activation, 67,837 motorists were detected speeding out of the 7,492,544 overall road users.
This included 895 excessive speed offences of 25km/h or more over the speed limit.
