Emergency workers firing up for the kids

THERE is usually a bit of healthy competition between the CFA and MFB, but this Good Friday they’ll
Dandenong firefighter Sam Webb is one of the firefighters at the Dandenong Fire Brigade taking part in a 24-hour MFB/CFA City of Melbourne Relay to raise money for The Royal Children’s Hospital 2011 Good Friday Appeal.
The relay brings together the CFA and MFB, which run teams of firefighters side by side around a city block for 24 hours from 9am on Thursday 21 April until 9am Good Friday.
“I suppose while we’re in the job we’re in, with the volunteers and the MFB, we’re fit enough so we might as well do it,” Mr Webb said.
“And it’s for a good cause; everyone knows what the Children’s Hospital is about.”
Firefighter and CFA relay organiser James Wong said last year’s inaugural event was a huge success, raising $15,397 and covering more than 300 kilometres.
“It brings two services together for the one cause and is supported by both the CFA and MFB management in just another way to support our communities,” Mr Wong said.
It is the second year Mr Webb will take part in the relay, although his participation will be limited this year because of shift work.
“Last year I did the whole 24 hours but this year it’s a bit harder with the shift work so I’ll hopefully be there for about five hours,” he said.
He said there would be a good turnout from the CFA and the Dandenong station.
“Most boys try to do what they can when they can do it,” Mr Webb said.
“And the public find it a bit amusing to see two firies running around a city block for 24 hours, which you don’t see every day.”
The relay will take in Bourke Street, Elizabeth Street, Collins Street and Swanston Street.
The public is encouraged to watch the relay and donate to this cause.
“It’s important we do donate. The Royal Children’s Hospital is a good one considering what they can do,” Mr Webb said.
