DANDENONG’S sublime basketball season in the inaugural Victorian Youth Championship came to a halt on Sunday afternoon – downed by Sandringham in a nail-biting 59-64 loss.
With two minutes left in the third term, everything seemed to be falling Dandenong’s way – up 49-40 and only 12 minutes away from a championship.
Those final 12 minutes belonged to the Sabres though – Sandringham ran over the top of the Rangers in the final term to hoist the pennant and prevent Dandenong claiming a three-peat of victories in the league, following their SEABL/Basketball Victoria D-League wins in 2011 and 2012.
Leading the way for the Rangers were Geraldine McCorkell (12 points, 11 rebounds, three blocks) and Bridget Deery (15 points, eight rebounds).
Narre Warren North’s Georgi Lovelace hit 10 points and claimed four rebounds with Beaconsfield’s Bree Whatman snaring six points and two rebounds in her final domestic game before heading overseas to participate in the American college basketball season for the North Dakota State Bisons.
