Delving into Dandenong’s gems

DISCOVER Your Own Backyard is a new campaign to boost the City of Greater Dandenong’s economy – and take locals and visitors on a global journey on their doorstep.
The council joined forces with Destination Melbourne to produce the tourism campaign, including a website and video, and launched it at the Drum Theatre in Dandenong on 10 May.
Material so far features four ambassadors sharing their favourite spots in the city and encouraging residents, businesses and visitors to explore Greater Dandenong’s hidden gems – and spread the word to family and friends.
Despina Karatzias explores parks, gardens and playgrounds, chef Russell Bald tours the Dandenong Market for exotic produce and bargains, tour guide Bashir Keshtiar reveals the municipality’s cultural precincts, and the council’s cultural planning officer and proud local Grissel Walmaggia shows off public art projects.
Mayor Angela Long encouraged others to take on the ambassador role – to explore the sights, sounds and tastes of Greater Dandenong, and spread the word about the community.
“The area has undergone a dramatic transformation over the past few years, and it’s time to show it off to our friends, family and visitors,” she said.
Cr Long said people could invite family and friends to a local restaurant, event or festival and share the campaign videos on social media.
