Standout spirit of service

By CASEY NEILL

GREATER Dandenong Citizen of the Year Beverley Douglas is “amazed that anyone thought that I’d deserve it, actually”.
The 70-year-old was set to receive her honour at the council’s Australia Day Awards ceremony at the Drum Theatre in Dandenong today (Monday).
Judges said the Springvale resident of more than 60 years had been instrumental in helping the Springvale Learning and Activity Centre (SLAC) respond to a changing community through new programs and services.
“Her community spirit, can-do attitude and selfless commitment to helping others demonstrates the true meaning of community service and makes her a standout figure for Citizen of the Year,” they said.
Beverley modestly told the Journal she did “only a little bit” for the community.
She started her work at SLAC 38 years ago when it was Springvale Youth Club and her children attended for a range of activities such as gymnastics, dance and music lessons.
“I used to help with anything that needed to be done – putting up gymnastics equipment, sewing dance costumes,” she said.
“I’ve been on the committee for about 30 years now. I’ve been vice president for 10 years.
“It’s mostly committee work now.”
Beverley said the centre was always welcoming and friendly.
“Over these years I’ve made friends there. I’ve just felt that it was something that I enjoy doing,” she said.
“I’ve just stayed around.”
And her eldest daughter Leah has too, despite working full time and living in McKinnon.
“She’d been the secretary for a few years and took over the presidency at our last annual meeting,” she said.
Beverley can be found at SLAC once a week these days and will continue to be involved “while I’m still fit and can drive up there and contribute to the centre”.
“We don’t have as much for the younger children as we used to when we first became involved there,” she said.
“There are things for young people there, like homework support groups and basketball.
“But it’s more a place for the community, from young teenagers right through to the very elderly.”
Beverley thanked the staff and committee members who nominated her.
