Australia Post workers are helping Dandenong charity Wallara to boost literacy levels.
Dandenong Delivery Centre delivery manager Brian Duggan said they were looking to get more involved in the community and one postie had a bright idea.
Warwick James delivers to Wallara, a support service for adults with disabilities, and thought there might be an opportunity to reach out.
Admin officer Carol McGrath suggested writing postcards and the Wallara literacy program thought the project was a perfect fit.
Australia Post welcomed the students to the Nathan Road delivery hub on Tuesday 6 June for a tour and barbecue.
More than 1000 employees work at the site, which processes more than five million articles each day.
Wallara’s Karen Scholey said the crew couldn’t believe how big the facility was and how many people worked there.
“They didn’t realise how much work was involved in getting people’s letters delivered,” she said.
“The big standout was how friendly the AusPost team was – and they want to know when we’re taking them back!
“I really can’t thank the AusPost team enough for wanting to learn more about Wallara and how they can get involved and help make a difference.
“They really did give our clients a day to remember and we look forward to working with them to see how we can open up more opportunities.”
