End of library fines?

Greater Dandenong Council is investigating whether to offer a fines amnesty at its libraries.

At a council meeting on 9 September, Cr Sean O’Reilly asked if the council would look at a “kinder” and “more user-friendly” approach to late returns of borrowed library items.

Community services director Martin Fidler said council officers were preparing a report on the initiative.

He noted councils in Melbourne and around the world offered a fine amnesty to return library items.

“At the moment we’re investigating this trend and what the cost may be.”
