VPL: Dandenong Thunder silenced in empty venue

TWO goals from former Southern Stars striker David Stirton gave Bentleigh Greens a 3-0 win over Dandenong Thunder at an empty George Andrews Reserve on Saturday.

The Victorian Premier League treble winners played their first of five matches behind closed doors after crowd problems in last year’s VPL grand final and the Greens filled the silence with goals in an impressive display.

Stirton got an early goal and then made to 2-0 before half-time with a driving free kick. Early in the second half Thunder winger Liam Kearney was given a red card for what the referee deemed to be a two-footed tackle against Greens’ player Liam McCormick.

Luke Fitzpatrick finished the scoring, tapping home a Greens corner.

The Thunder have now drawn and lost their first two matches and remain on -2 points as part of the grand final penalties. They host another crowd-free game when Richmond visits this Saturday at 3pm.
