Manufacturing jobs in Melbourne’s south-east quartered

ABOUT a quarter of manufacturing jobs in Melbourne’s south-east have been lost in the past year, the state opposition said, citing Australian Bureau of Statistics data.

In the 12 months to May, 10,700 of 44,600 manufacturing jobs were axed in the region that includes Greater Dandenong, Cardinia and Casey.

About 85 per cent of the jobs lost were full-time, Opposition manufacturing spokesman Adem Somyurek said, adding that the government refused to deliver a plan to create jobs.

“These continuing job losses are causing a crisis of confidence in Dandenong and other manufacturing hubs.”
