Stepping out against a killer

A SPRINGVALE South resident is putting her best foot forward to shed some light on a silent killer.
Nadege Fabert will take part in the Lupus Foundation Walk for Lupus Awareness this Saturday.
“I personally do not have lupus but I know someone who died from lupus and I know others that have it and have watched them suffer with the disease,” she said.
“So I would like to show support because not a lot of awareness is there compared to other diseases and there’s a lot that have it but you wouldn’t know.”
Lupus is a chronic auto-immune disease where the immune system fails to recognise its own cells and tissues from foreign invaders.
The immune system produces antibodies directed against itself, causing inflammation and damage to tissues and organs. It can cause joint/muscle pain, fatigue, strokes, or heart and kidney failure.
Walk for Lupus Awareness participants will wear a provided Lupus awareness T-shirt and butterfly wings.
They’ll assemble at Melbourne Town Hall from 9.30am for a flag-raising ceremony, and at 11am start their walk down Swanston Street to Kings Domain Gardens from the corner of Bourke Street.
All participants will receive free tickets to the Australia Day Boat Cruise on Monday 28 January at the Docklands, leaving at 12.30pm and returning at 4pm.
To register for the walk, volunteer or donate, call Carla Steiner on 8555 9295 or email info@lupus-sle.org.
Lupus Foundation is a registered charity. Donations over $2 are tax deductible.
