“I COULDN’T breathe for like three seconds afterwards. They put a lot of ice in my bucket!”
But Mayor Jim Memeti was proud to have taken part in the ALS Ice Bucket Challenge, to raise funds for amyotrophic lateral sclerosis research, known in Australia as motor neurone disease.
“We’re collecting a bit of money as a council, and the challenge went well,” he said.
“I’m not sure how we’re going to go, but it will be in the hundreds – hopefully $1000.”
Dani Zeini from Dandenong Pavilion nominated Cr Memeti, who in turn nominated city planning, design and amenity director Jody Bosman, corporate services director Mick Jaensch and Cr Sean O’Reilly.
About 60 people surrounded Cr Memeti and four other City of Greater Dandenong staff as they took the challenge in the Dandenong civic square last Friday afternoon.
“As an organisation, we’ve raised awareness,” he said.
“It’s a terrible disease, and anyone who has family or friends with it knows it’s a terrible disease.
“The body shuts down and the minds remain normal.
“It’s for a good cause.”
